The challenge was next to impossible - to capture the heart and soul of a town in an image that could be understood in under 10 seconds because it was located at a very busy intersection. It took weeks to come up with the guidelines; Santa Cruz had magic, a diverse population, and a beautiful location by the sea. The best way to show diversity is to be as vague as possible - if you are too literal, you're bound to leave someone out. All the people in the mural except one no longer live ithere.
